Sharing is caring!

  • The Child Development Center has been prescribing this supplement to our patients for over 10 years. The following  represents all of the science that is required to get moving with assisting your child who has developmental delays that have been diagnosed as “on the spectrum”:

  1. The administration of a common vitamin, Folinic Acid ~ Leucovorin ~ Vitamin B9), has created significant improvements in physicians’ ability to support language development and advance other important developmental milestones in patients. The vitamin is presently available in prescription form, known as Leucovorin Calcium.
  2. The outcome measures can be observed as improved words, language, communication, and conversation. The protocols alter the course of autism by improving brain processing, as evidenced by the emergence of new social skills.
  3. The patient must be healthy to tolerate this activating supplement. A medical workup should be performed to identify areas of inflammation or toxicity throughout the body that may interfere with improvement from taking activating vitamins.
  4. Additional metabolic and nutritional evaluation can assist with progress, indicating areas that require specific vitamin and energy support. At the Child Development Center, we no longer test specifically for the MTHFR gene variation or FRAT antibodies. Even if everything is within normal limits, patients make significant improvements, and response has not correlated with those lab values. Who wouldn’t want to give this vitamin a try?
  5. Words must come first, so if speech is entirely absent, methyl B12 injections can help get brain activity started.
  6. The side effect of energy is energy… start slow and go low with this vitamin, and you might see great progress.

This is the handout the we supply for our patients who wish to get into the regimen:

FOLINIC ACID SUPPLEMENT
Purpose:
Dr Udell is prescribing a nutritional supplement that helps improve communication, vocalization, and processing.
This will work with the other activating compounds to create new pathways for speech and interaction.

Reason for THIS FOLINIC ACID SUPPLEMENT
At this time, this is the ONLY PROTOCOL that will enable patients to improve the parts of their brains that are involved with communication.

Dose and timing of FOLINIC ACID SUPPLEMENT
Your child will be prescribed a dose that applies to their age, weight and symptoms. Starting doses may be as low as 1/4 of a 5 milligram pill (=1.25 mg), up to doses exceeding 20 mg.

The correct dose of leucovorin is the amount that improves processing and speech without causing too much overactivity.

Dosing varies with each patient.

We have found that by giving a single dose in the morning, there is less chance of after-school unraveling or interference with sleep.

Duration of Treatment with FOLINIC ACID SUPPLEMENT
This supplement is so important that is generally given throughout the treatment PERIOD UP TO YEARS, as speech and language progresses to conversation with adults, then other peers.

How to Administer the FOLINIC ACID SUPPLEMENT
Supplement forms are usually as a pill, which may be divided, crushed or given whole, depending on the dose.

How Will We Know if FOLINIC ACID SUPPLEMENT is Working?
In the first few weeks, the caretaker should start to see ‘surprising’ behaviors’, such as speech or behavior, that only may only last a day or so. This is often replaced by more new connections and resulting improvements.
Please expect the real world improvements to be in words, phrases, sentences up to questions and conversation, first with adults and later, with peers. So, this takes time.

Side Effects of FOLINIC ACID SUPPLEMENT
The side of energizing vitamins is … visibly increased energy! This might be balanced by reducing other activating compounds in the protocol. When more than the usual increase in activity, consider the gastrointestinal or metabolic interference.

Supplement Interactions
Consider all of the other activating compounds and whether they continue to assist the protocol. There are supplemental staples, such as methyl B12, glutathione, mitochondrial support, and maintaining GI health. Otherwise, consider outcome measures, rather than theoretical improvements in lab values., etc.

Where to Obtain FOLINIC ACID SUPPLEMENT
A prescription by a physician is necessary a this time.
